About the Program
In 1910, Igor Stravinsky and Maurice Ravel met at a premier of Stravinsky’s “The Firebird” in Paris. The composers developed an instant friendship that inspired an artistic admiration for each other.
In 2015, a conductor and Stravinsky's longtime assistant, Robert Craft, wrote in his book: Stravinsky: Discoveries and Memories, suggesting the relationship between Stravinsky and Ravel went far beyond friendship during three inspiring years of Diaghilev’s “Ballet Russe” in Paris. Their surviving letters to each other have an intimate and jocular tone which mark Stravinsky as one of the closest of Ravel’s acquaintances. This program is exploring repertoire written by both composers giving a personal insight into the emotional world of two great artists of the XXth century.
