Festival PiaNOLA featuring Xiaohui Yang

Festival PiaNOLA features a community masterclass, orchestral performances, and a salon concert by festival artist 2016 New Orleans International Piano Competition Gold Medalist Xiaohui Yang.

Events and concerts include:

  • January 9 - 10: Community Masterclass Auditions and Class (CLICK HERE to download the masterclass application)  The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) and Musical Arts Society of New Orleans (MASNO) invite amateur pianists to apply for the 2nd Annual Festival PiaNOLA Masterclass. The audition takes place on Tuesday, January 9th, 2018, 5:30 PM at Dixon Recital Hall on Tulane University’s campus. The competition is open to pianists age 16 and over.

    Three winning pianists will have the opportunity to participate in a masterclass taught by renowned pianist Xiaohui Yang while performing on the LPO’s new Steinway Concert Grand in the Orpheum Theater. The masterclass will take place on Wednesday, January 10th, 2018 at the Orpheum Theater beginning at 7:00 PM. The masterclass is free and open to the public. CLICK HERE for more information.

    Each winner will also receive two tickets to the LPO’s Brahms' Symphony No. 1 concert on January 12th-13th at the Orpheum Theater and also to MASNO’s Salon featuring Xiaohui Yang on January 11th at the Beauregard-Keyes House and Gardens. The three winners of the competition will be determined by a panel of judges selected by the LPO and MASNO.

  • January 11, 6:30 p.m., Beauregard-Keyes House and Gardens - MASNO presents Xiaohui Yang in a Salon Concert Event where she will perform works by Schubert, Schoenberg, and Liszt.  CLICK HERE for tickets and more information.
  • January 12 and 13, 7:30 p.m. - The LPO presents Brahms Symphony No. 1 - Carlos Miguel Prieto conducts some famous firsts, beginning with Samuel Barber’s very first orchestral composition, the brilliant Overture to School for Scandal. With celebrated soloist Xiaohui Yang at the piano, Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini offers a technical interlude. The concert ends with Johannes Brahms’ intense, painstakingly composed Symphony No. 1. For tickets and information visit lpomusic.com.
  • January 14, 2:30 p.m., St. Mary's Church - Musical Offerings | Chamber Music 
    Presented by the LPO, Xiaohui Yang joins LPO musicians in this chamber concert. The program includes Bach’s Trio Sonata from the Musical Offering and Golijov’s Lullaby and Doina. Xiaohui Yang’s virtuosity is on show in the final piece of the afternoon, Dohnányi’s Sextet in C Major. Tickets and Info at lpomusic.com.
